Are You REAL ID Ready?

Starting May 7, 2025, REAL ID Act Takes Full Effect

Travelers Must Be REAL ID Compliant to Board Domestic Flights and Access Certain Federal Facilities

The REAL ID Act prohibits federal agencies from accepting driver licenses and identification cards issued by U.S. States and territories that do not meet certain security standards. Starting May 7, 2025, the REAL ID Act takes full effect. From this date, every state and territory resident will need to present a REAL ID to board domestic flights and access certain federal facilities, such as military bases and nuclear power plants.

To get a REAL ID, you will need to visit your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and provide the following documents:

  • Proof of identity (such as a birth certificate or passport)
  • Proof of U.S. citizenship or legal residency (such as a Social Security card or permanent resident card)
  • Proof of your current address (such as a utility bill or bank statement)

The DMV will take your photo and issue you a REAL ID. The cost of a REAL ID varies by state, but it typically costs around $25.

If you do not have a REAL ID by May 7, 2025, you will not be able to board domestic flights or access certain federal facilities. You will still be able to drive, but you may need to show additional identification when you are stopped by law enforcement.
