Wimbledon 2024: Day One Recap
Coco Gauff and Emma Raducanu Impress on Opening Day
Coco Gauff Cruises Past Caroline Dolehide
American teenager Coco Gauff got her Wimbledon 2024 campaign off to a flying start, defeating compatriot Caroline Dolehide 6-1, 6-2 in an all-American clash. Gauff dominated the match from the start, breaking Dolehide's serve three times in the first set and twice in the second. The 19-year-old showed no signs of nerves on her Wimbledon debut, hitting 25 winners and making just 12 unforced errors.
Emma Raducanu's Scrappy Victory
British number one Emma Raducanu also had a successful start to her Wimbledon campaign, albeit in a much harder-fought match against Renata Zarazua. The Mexican qualifier took the first set to a tiebreak, but Raducanu eventually prevailed 7-6 (7-2). Raducanu then broke Zarazua's serve in the third game of the second set and held on for a 6-3 victory.
Raducanu Likens Her Win to England's Euros Triumph
After the match, Raducanu compared her battling victory to England's scrappy win over Germany in the last-16 of the Euro 2020 tournament. "It was a similar feeling," Raducanu said. "We had to grind it out, we had to dig deep, we had to fight for every point. But in the end, we got the win."
