F1 : Charles Leclerc Secures Pole Position for Azerbaijan Grand Prix
Leclerc triumphs in Baku qualifying, Verstappen second
Charles Leclerc of Ferrari has claimed pole position for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, edging out Red Bull's Max Verstappen in a thrilling qualifying session. The Monegasque driver delivered a sensational lap at the Baku City Circuit, securing his second pole of the 2023 season.
Verstappen, who had been quickest in all three practice sessions, will start alongside Leclerc on the front row. The Dutchman was unable to match Leclerc's blistering pace on his final lap, settling for second place.
Sainz and Pérez secure third and fourth
Carlos Sainz of Ferrari and Sergio Pérez of Red Bull will line up behind Leclerc and Verstappen on the second row. Sainz narrowly missed out on a front-row start, finishing just 0.058 seconds behind his teammate. Pérez, meanwhile, will be looking to make amends for his disappointing performance in Monaco, where he crashed out of the race.
Hamilton and Russell struggle
Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes and George Russell will start the race from fifth and sixth positions respectively. Hamilton admitted to struggling with his car's balance throughout qualifying, while Russell made a mistake on his final lap that cost him a chance of a higher starting position.
Gasly impresses for Alpine
Pierre Gasly was one of the standout performers of qualifying, securing seventh place for Alpine. The Frenchman has been in impressive form since joining the team this season, and his performance in Baku further highlights his potential.
Aston Martin and McLaren struggle
Aston Martin and McLaren have both had a disappointing qualifying session, with Fernando Alonso and Lando Norris starting from 10th and 11th positions respectively. Both teams will be hoping for a better race on Sunday.
