Southend residents to be offered free bulky waste collection

Council approves plans for new service

Southend residents are to be offered free bulky waste collection as part of a new service approved by the council. The council agreed to introduce the new service at a meeting on Wednesday, January 18.

How will the service work?

The service will be available to all residents in Southend and will allow them to dispose of up to three bulky items per year for free. Items that can be disposed of include furniture, appliances, and mattresses. Residents will be able to book a collection online or by phone.

When will the service start?

The service is due to start in April 2023. Further details about the service, including how to book a collection, will be announced in due course.

Why is the council introducing the service?

The council is introducing the service in response to feedback from residents who have said that they would like to have an easier way to dispose of bulky waste. The council also hopes that the service will help to reduce the amount of fly-tipping in the borough.

What has the council said about the service?

Councillor Carole Mulroney, cabinet member for environment and waste, said: “We are pleased to be able to offer this new service to our residents. We know that bulky waste can be difficult to dispose of, so we hope that this new service will make it easier for people to get rid of their unwanted items in a responsible way.”

What do residents think about the service?

Residents have welcomed the news of the new service. One resident said: “This is a great idea. It will be so much easier to get rid of bulky waste now.” Another resident said: “I’m really pleased that the council is introducing this service. It will make a big difference to residents.”
